In welding, the arc emits a broad spectrum of electromagnetic radiation, with the main light found in the infrared, visible, and ultraviolet ranges. Infrared carries most of the heat you feel from the arc, visible light is the bright light you see, and ultraviolet is high-energy radiation that can burn skin and injure eyes, so protective filters must block UV and IR as well as glare. These three bands cover the typical light produced in standard welding; x-ray, microwave, and radio waves aren’t produced in ordinary arc welding, so they aren’t part of the usual light output.
